Hello,
thanks for visiting. For the occasion I've put out a complimentary image to this one.

Saluti.

I like the photo of the tree perched atop the dam. Does it suggest that nature (water and debris) cannot be held back by man? Does it hint that there's a nice body of water and forest beyond the sterile, imposing concrete wall? Maybe we (humans) have no business trying to control nature?

Dunno... But I think it's a cool shot of an event about to happen. The kid inside me would love to be there to see the old log tumble and crash down :-)

Mauro - thanks for stopping by again. I'll go look at your image.

TJ - I think it's the kinetic potential that attracted my eye. But it fits with my series as an attempt to control nature: one of my favorite nonfiction books is The Control of Nature by John McPhee. All your other suggestions as readings work too. Ultimately what it means is: there are lives and realities beyond the wall of silence and power in front of our faces, we need to go find them.

I've not been past the dam again in some time, but since this image is at least 3 years old, I'm pretty sure the log is gone by now. We both missed it!

You can see Mauro's take on the demolition of things here.

The image above is actually rather positive, since it comes from a scrap yard where material is being gathered together to be shipped off to a larger recycling facility. None of this is landfill material.
